I am so sorry to learn that Dave has passed on ahead. We both went to Madison Simis, where we knew each other well, but as rivals. Almost all the 1965 Simis grads went to Central, and I believed Dave would go there, too. I thought Jay Banderet, Kathy Mellis and I were the only Simis kids not going to Central. When Dave also showed up at Camelback, we were immediately friends, and no more rivals.
Dave was always lively, and the incident involving him that I remember best occurred during the Senior "Sit-in" at the Gym, as he and others launched themselves on ropes from the high perches provided by folded up bleachers. As he swung back towards his perch, he slid down the rope a bit, and absorbed a solid blow to his torso from the unforgiving bleachers. Dave was always tough, and he laughed it off, but I wonder if he cracked a rib or two.
As the years have passed, I have found an increasingly tender spot in my heart for the friends of my youth, and I will miss Dave.
Well said, Jeff. Dave was nothing if not daring. Perhaps we should have a get together of a group of CHS alums who survived riding along with Dave in his Jeep. We could all share stories about how our close-death experiences taught us to cherish life and drive defensively! RIP Dave.
I remember Dave as kind of wild and crazy from school. But my strongest memory is of him at one of our reunions (maybe the 30th?). He was so happy to be there, and seemed so happy in life. There's a picture from that reunion with all of us standing in rows on risers, but Dave is lying on his side on the floor just grinning. Wish I could find that!
Dave and I became better friends in our senior year, and I went to the Verde river with him a couple of times in a Mr. Toad's Wild Ride in that jeep. He was always joking and clowning around .... Good memories.
